These are our most pressing needs:
Sponsorship of Junior Field Officers (JFOs) Our JFOs are high school graduates. In a country where less than 5% of people continue on to tertiary education, these youth from at-risk backgrounds have thrived, finished in the top of their class, and have a chance to make it. They come from Kibera, where half the population is under 15 and few will see a high school classroom. They want to give back to the youth of Kibera, and ZanaA keeps them moving forward during this otherwise risky gap year for them.
The one-year JFO placement in ZanaA helps equip them with life skills as they are equipping primary and secondary school students. They train in all aspects of the Empowerment Groups they teach (reproductive health, HIV, alcoholism, leadership, etc), learn group facilitation skills and conduct field work. They emerge highly employable, but their goal is to continue with education. They will start writing business plans in June and by October should have their respective businesses funded and running. Right now they are researching courses to apply for, and by January we expect all of them to be continuing their education, funded at least in part by their business. In the meantime, their income of $68 per month provides much-needed support for their families. Many of them are helping to put their siblings through school and feed their extended family with this income.
We are looking for 12 individuals, families or groups to sponsor 10 JFOs and 2 HFOs for 2009, $120 per person per month for wages, communications, and transportation. You will be introduced to the field officer via email and can communicate as much as you would desire. The JFO will write you every quarter with an update about their life, and you will have a chance to be another important voice of encouragement.
We would love to get sponsorship by Empowerment Group (EG), to give you a picture of the lives of twenty or fewer students as they go through life and our Empowerment Group, through the lens of the Junior Field Officer who oversees the class. To equip each EG with the supplies it needs is $54 per month. We currently have 41 EGs weekly, and 9 which are monthly, for a lower cost of only $10 per month
Office purchase We have just found an office near Kibera in a section called Fort Jesus. It is a 6 room house with 8 subdivisions. In this facility we would have two rooms for volunteers and our Head Field Officer in residence, 2 offices, 1 storage room, and a board/meeting room. We would also have a lounge and a kitchen. This amounts to 151 square meters for about US $27,000.
We are offering donors the opportunity to buy rooms from between $1,000 and $8,900 per room, and will put a plaque up in your name or in the name of the person you would like to dedicate it to.
We already have 6 field officers, but will be expanding to 22 in January to increase the number of Empowerment Groups in schools from 50 to 200! Additionally, as our sanitary pad distribution increases we are under increasing pressure to find better storage.
The rooms can be "purchased" as follows: 4 mid-sized rooms for $4900 each; 2 large rooms for $6900; our board/dining room for $8900; the kitchen for $3,900; and the store for $1,000. This adds up to $47,200 and gives us a reasonable budget for legal fees, stamp duty, renovations and furnishings.
In a multi-tiered sponsorship program, Sunday schools, school classrooms, families or foundations can find meaning through supporting an EC or JFO:
· $9.15 – Cost of sanitary pads and underwear to help a girl win back 4 days of school per month, for the entire year. Goal = 18,240 for 3 years
· $12.22 – Cost for one student to attend an Empowerment Group (EC) for a year
· $54 – Cost per month of running an EC. Sponsors will be linked directly to a JFO via email who will provide updates on the school, and will be given a pdf file that includes information about the school and the students in the EC. Classes who sponsor can talk directly with the JFO and, where possible, with the students themselves. Term = $216, full year = $648
· $120 – Monthly cost to sponsor a JFO. Sponsors receive a summary of the JFO: background, aspirations, business goals for the year, personal interests. Sponsors may communicate directly with the JFOs through email. Term = $480, year = $1440
· $750 – Average loan amount per JFO to start a business to fund their education, repayable within one year into a revolving fund for future JFOs
More substantial funding for one-time investments
This funding will likely come from individuals creating giving circles with specific targets, families, churches, and family foundations:
· $5,000 – Cost to upgrade our website to a full WordPress-based site with daily blogs including photos from JFOs and enhanced communication abilities
· $8,000 – Cost of a guarantee against all loans for our JFOs businesses with Equity Bank, converted into a revolving fund (ave $750 per JFO)
· $10,000 – ZanaA desires to match JFO’s savings that they invest in their education
· $21,600 – Cost to create the blue-print manual for replication of the EC program complete with YouTube modules of all trainings
· $50,000 – Sanitary pads and underwear for over 4,500 girls in Kibera for one year
· $80,000 – Ensure we have a Kenyan professional psychologist as full-time Program Manager for two years

Resolution Health has agreed to donate KES 300,000 this year, and we are exploring an enhanced partnership. Our goal is to have 25 companies support ZanaAfrica's initiatives at a level of KES 500,000+ to help us achieve our goals.
For only KES 165 your company can keep one girl in school for a term: what a huge impact for such a small amount of money!
Assuming 60 menstruating girls per school and a student body of 200, and an average household size per student of 5, the following contributions give the following impact:
KES 500,000 - 3,030 girls in school for a term - 50 schools - 10,100 students - 50,500 household members impacted
KES 1,000,000 - 6,060 girls in school for a term - 100 schools - 20,200 students - 101,000 household members impacted
Support of such an intimate need is likely to directly impact customer appreciation, translated into customer loyalty.
Companies that give KES 1 million or more can co-brand sanitary pads to achieve both marketing objectives and Corporate Social Responsiblity objectives.
Companies can also come and help distribute sanitary pads in schools, giving their employees a valuable volunteer experience.
We believe Kenya has the resources to eradicate its own poverty, and we want to work with companies who are also committed to ensuring that happens.
