Project Goals & Results Project Goals
• Centrally register all schools and sanitary pad providers to coordinate the sanitary pad distribution through an online partnership with Google, the Ministry of Education, and mobile phone companies
• Create local sanitary pad production in Kenya to make low-cost, environmentally-sound sanitary pads that can be distributed to girls in school and bottom of the pyramid women throughout Kenya
• Directly and indirectly distribute Makapads and underwear at no cost to Kenyan girls who cannot afford them to ensure that they can attend school throughout the year, including during menstruation
• Provide a standardized training and certification for all distributors including a basic hygiene and health training to ensure girls know how to use and dispose of the pads and best care for their own health as women
Target end results
• Girls improved attendance, performance, self-grooming and self-esteem
• Affordable, environmentally-friendly sanitary pads provision: one-year supplies for 22,000 girls by the end of 2009; 316,000 girls by 2011; and, 1.2 million girls by 2015
• Increase in completion rates for girls ages 16-20 from 35% to 55% by 2015
• Girls Empowerment Groups in every school in Kenya monitoring performance metrics each term, coordinated through the website
• Full endowment by 2025 through commercial sales of MakaPads to ensure annual supply of sanitary pads to over 2 million girls in perpetuity
• In-house research and development department
• ZanaA able to offer its model to other countries throughout global South
• Dynamic on-line visual map of the schools to synchronize fundraising, distribution, statistics gathering, reporting and ensuring transparency and streamlining logistical costs
