Our Programs

At ZanaAfrica, we implement innovative programming for both adolescent girls and boys in Kenya, to help them safely navigate puberty and unlock their potential. We take an ecosystem approach to delivering our work across Kenya:

Macro Level Work

Adapting ZanaAfrica’s curriculum for public schools

In 2020, ZanaAfrica developed The Uwezo Initiative to adapt and scale our program across classrooms, training teachers to deliver our reproductive health and rights education across Kenya.

In Swahili, the word “uwezo” means “to foster” and “to empower.” True to the meaning, ZanaAfrica is working tirelessly to reach more than 200,000 adolescents on path to one day reach all 13M youth in Kenya with the education they need to have more control over their bodies, decisions, and futures.

To achieve these goals, ZanaAfrica has launched a partnership with the Kenyan Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to adapt our program for school-based delivery. Through this initiative, ZanaAfrica and KICD will co-create a teacher training program to equip teachers with the tools they need to deliver ZanaAfrica’s educational program across public schools.

Local Level Work

Creating change with and for communities

In 2021, ZanaAfrica launched Kuza Nia, an in person and online training program for 85 community partner organizations who receive training from ZanaAfrica on topics related relating to adolescence, puberty, teenage pregnancy, mental health, and goal setting, in the context of and in the aftermath of COVID-19.

These training sessions help partners deliver health sessions to adolescents locally. The effort includes delivering r our Nia at Home comic series, sanitary pads, and underpants to tens of thousands of girls reached through these 85 organizations, spanning the nation.
