Meet Getrude

Getrude is a 15-year old student from Kilifi, Kenya. She participated in one of ZanaAfrica’s Nia Health Clubs. In this video, Gertrude talks about how the Nia programs helped her build confidence, learn how to build healthy relationships, and understand how gender stereotypes impact us all.

“I loved Nia because it gave me confidence. I used to be afraid of public speaking, but now I am even excited to counsel my friends.”

““My favorite topic is on gender stereotypes. At home, my mother did not want my brother to wash the dishes, because she would say those are girls’ chores. I also used to think they were only girls’ chores. Sometimes even when I would play football with my male cousins, my mother would tell me I’m playing boys’ games. But since we started the Nia classes with our mentors,  I sat my mum down to teach her the same message.  And she also read the lessons and changed her views on gender stereotypes.
